The Russians lack the military qualities to act quickly.
It's already clear that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has high hopes for a summer offensive in Ukraine. But time is running out for the Kremlin. Russia has roughly "four months" to make a breakthrough before weather and resource problems set in. That's the assessment expressed by military expert Jack Watling of the RUSI think tank.
"The Russians lack the military skills to act quickly," the expert said.
He suggests that Russia will favor a gradual expansion of hostilities over a rapid mechanized attack.
Watling predicts that the Soviet stocks of equipment on which Russia has relied so far will run out by mid-autumn.
"Russia's ability to compensate for its losses will depend entirely on what it can produce from scratch," the expert said.
In this context, potential new sanctions from the West could seriously affect Russia's ability to go on the offensive.
