Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Poland's capital.
Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Warsaw on Sunday, a week before the second round of Poland's presidential election, to show support for the two rival candidates, the capital's mayor Rafal Trzaskowski and historian Karol Nawrocki.
Trzaskowski, backed by a centrist government led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, led a "Great March of Patriots." The procession ended in Constitution Square. Among the slogans were calls for the protection of democracy, European reforms and the legalization of abortion, which Trzaskowski promises to pursue if he wins. The rally was also attended by Romanian President-elect Nicusor Dan, an EU supporter who recently defeated a nationalist candidate in his country.
A parallel "March for Poland" organized by Trzaskowski's rival in the second round of elections, Karol Nawrocki, was held in central Warsaw. His supporters marched to Castle Square in Warsaw's Old Town, singing patriotic and religious songs.
