Kaya Kallas called for pressure to be put on Moscow.
The European Union intends to apply sanctions against Russia in a coordinated manner with partners, including the United States. This was announced by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on the sidelines of a meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, May 26. "We must put pressure on Russia so that there is a desire for peace there as well," journalists quoted her as saying.
The politician said the European side is ready to do so and hopes that other international partners will follow suit. At the same time, Kallas called the recent Russian army strikes on Kiev "absolutely horrifying" and suggested that Moscow is thus putting pressure on Ukraine.
A day earlier, Kaya Kallas also publicly called for increased pressure on Russia. "The attacks carried out last night show that Russia is committed to further suffering and destruction of Ukraine. It is shocking to see children among the innocent victims, injured and killed. My thoughts are with these families today. We need the strongest international pressure on Russia to stop this war," she wrote on social media X.
Earlier in the day, Vladimir Zelensky called for new sanctions against Russia amid its massive attacks on Ukrainian cities. "Every such terrorist Russian strike is a sufficient reason for new sanctions against Russia. Russia is prolonging this war and continues to kill on a daily basis," the country's president wrote in Telegram.
