The Lithuanian Interior Ministry Told About The Strengthening Of The Border With Belarus

Funds for security can be provided by the European Union.

Lithuanian Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovic said that it is already necessary to think about updating technical equipment on the border with Belarus and Russia, LRT reported.

"We see that it is really necessary to invest in equipment, including surveillance equipment. Unfortunately, systems have a tendency to become obsolete over time. We need to start preparations to update all systems today," the minister told reporters on Monday during a visit to the border with Belarus together with European Commission Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Bruner.

Access roads to the state border should also be equipped, he said.

"As we see, prompt response allows us to protect our border in a timely manner and deter illegal migrants, who are used as weapons against our country, from crossing our border," the minister said. Kondratović expressed hope that the European Union would allocate funds for border security.

"If there was such an opportunity to finance these projects, it would be really good," he said.

Kondratović urged the European Commission to take into account the financial needs of EU border countries, such as Lithuania, related to strengthening the security of external borders and critical infrastructure during negotiations on the future multi-year Community budget.
