The Russian government can reach into the pocket of the population.
Difficulties in the Russian economy and new probable restrictions from the EU and the US may force the Russian authorities to resort to unpopular steps, including expropriation of deposits of the population, as it was in the times of the USSR. This is stated in the article UNIAN "500% illusions: will the US and Europe dare to deliver a crushing blow to Russia".
As the chief consultant of the Center for Foreign Policy Studies of the National Institute for Strategic Studies Ivan Us told the publication, if new US sanctions are imposed, negative processes in the Russian economy will accelerate.
He reminds that the EU still receives 13% of gas from Russia. This means that the proposals of American Senator Lindsey Graham on increased duties for all buyers of Russian products will affect the EU, which will accelerate further refusal of the bloc from Russian energy resources. That, in turn, will hurt the Russian economy, which is already short of money.
"Because of this, Gazprom plans to cut its office by 40%. It is also expected to raise gas prices for Russians by 230%. The Russian government is not going for this idea yet, because the population will not like it very much, but it will be very difficult for them to find money any other way," says Us.
He says that by the end of the year, the Russian Federation will have only three options to quickly replenish the budget.
"They have a limited choice at all now - to raise prices for utilities, cut social spending on pensions and salaries for state employees, or expropriate 60 trillion rubles from deposits in banks," says the expert.
He believes that other options, like raising gas prices for the population, are extremely dangerous. Because it repeats the experience of the USSR, when the state stole people's savings on their books in the same way. That is why, among other things, few people were against the collapse of the Union at that time. It was the 'Pavlov reform' of 1991, which also became the basis for the collapse of the USSR," Us concludes.
