The U.S. and Russia discussed the launch of Nord Stream 2 during the talks.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Berlin will do everything possible to ensure that the damaged Nord Stream-2 pipeline does not resume Russian gas supplies to Europe. He said this at a press conference with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Berlin, writes The Guardian (translated by Charter97.org).
"We will continue to increase pressure on Russia," Merz said. - "In this context, we will do everything to ensure that Nord Stream 2 is not put back into operation."
The pipeline was damaged by underwater explosions in September 2022, which Western countries called an act of sabotage. The explosions destroyed one of the strings of Nord Stream-2 and both branches of its sister pipeline, Nord Stream-1.
Although Nord Stream-2 never began operating, Nord Stream-1 has long supplied cheap Russian gas to Europe via Germany. Critics of the project argued that it made Europe overly dependent on fossil fuels from Russia.
Media previously reported that the idea of restarting Nord Stream-2 was discussed as part of talks between the United States and Russia to end the war in Ukraine. Some German politicians have also previously expressed cautious support for restarting supplies.
In the meantime, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU was preparing a new package of sanctions including measures against Nord Stream-1 and Nord Stream-2 to prevent any attempts to restart them.
