But expanded against Bashar al-Assad's family.
The European Union has lifted sanctions on Syria. The decision concerns both the state and banks, key businesses and media, the EU council said Wednesday in a statement on its website.
At the same time, the bloc expanded the sanctions list against people and businesses the EU considers linked to the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad. In particular, under the restrictions may fall all officers of the Syrian army serving under Assad in the rank of colonel and above, all employees of the intelligence services of Syria from 2011 to December 2024, ministers of the same period, members of the Assad family and the influential Makhlouf family.
The decision to lift sanctions EU announced on May 20. The union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, said EU countries wanted to help the Syrian people "build a new, inclusive and peaceful Syria."
Earlier in May, US President Donald Trump announced the impending lifting of sanctions against the Syrian economy. That decision has yet to be formalized.
