The proposal calls for, among other things, a 60-day ceasefire.
Israel has agreed to a new version of a deal proposed by US special envoy Steve Whitkoff on hostage releases and a ceasefire, the country's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, writes Israel National News.
At the same time, the prime minister questioned the intentions of Palestinian Hamas, which "has not responded so far."
"We do not believe that Hamas will return the last hostage, and that is why we continue to fight until Hamas is eliminated and we will not leave the Gaza Strip until all the hostages are in our hands," Netanyahu said during a meeting with family members of dead hostages.
Before that, Hamas issued a statement saying it was studying Whitkoff's proposal and would make a decision "in a way that will serve the interests of the people."
According to The Jerusalem Post, the latest U.S. proposal calls for a 60-day ceasefire that would return 10 live hostages and 18 bodies. In addition, the plan calls for the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces from newly captured areas of the Gaza Strip, as well as returning the distribution of humanitarian aid to the United Nations.
Hamas, according to the Post, does not accept Whitkoff's proposal "at face value" and has demanded changes because it is more biased in Israel's favor.
However, Israel and Hamas have twice reached a truce and exchanged Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners. The last ceasefire ended in March. The parties failed to agree on its extension.
In May, Israel announced the start of a new ground operation in the Gaza Strip - "Gideon's Chariot". Now all regular infantry and armored brigades of the IDF are deployed there. In addition to the Golani, Givati, Commando, Kfir and other brigades, there are also reserve units in the Palestinian exclave.
