Sanctions Against Russia: Republicans On The Offensive

Trump's inner circle is convincing him to impose restrictive measures.

A number of congressional Republicans as well as White House advisers are urging US President Donald Trump to support new sanctions against aggressor country Russia.

Reuters writes Reuters on Thursday, May 29, recalling that the US leader has been delaying the decision to impose further anti-Russian sanctions, hoping for the effectiveness of negotiations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin on ending Russia's war against Ukraine. Trump also considers the sanctions often ineffective.

White House officials say Trump is still counting on an economic partnership with Russia, Reuters writes. He also sees the sanctions as a move to escalate tensions with Russian Federation, which could derail hopes for a ceasefire in Ukraine. However, Trump's aides say his displeasure with Putin is growing more serious. They said, Reuters writes, that after Moscow stepped up its strikes on Ukraine, Donald Trump is seriously considering new sanctions.

U.S. officials have prepared new economic measures against Russian Federation, including banking and energy measures. One option, which is supported by some of Trump's advisers, would be to pass a bill introduced by Senators Lindsey GrahamRichard Blumenthal that would impose a 500 percent tariff on imports of goods from countries that buy Russian oil.

Such a move, according to some advisers to the US president, would allow the imposition of tangible sanctions. At the same time, Trump himself could tell Putin that the decision on sanctions was beyond his control, preserving the possibility of direct dialog with the Kremlin, the agency said, citing an official familiar with the discussions.

This reporter's interlocutor, as well as another person familiar with the situation, said that the White House also believes that secondary sanctions - that is, measures against states that do business with Russia, not just against Russia itself - are necessary for an effective sanctions policy.
