U.S. Appeals Court Reinstates Trump's Blocked Duties

The court's decision is interim.

A U.S. federal appeals court has temporarily halted a ruling by the Court of Commerce that the previous day ruled that duties imposed by former President Donald Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) were unlawful.

It was reported by CNN.

The appeals court's decision once again gives Trump the authority to impose duties under a declared economic emergency. The court also ordered both sides to submit written arguments on the propriety of blocking the duties by early June.

The Commerce Court previously ruled that Trump exceeded his authority by imposing broad duties without a clear legislative justification. The ruling covered the so-called "tariff relief" tariffs of April 2, as well as sanctions against China, Mexico and Canada that were allegedly intended to combat fentanyl drug trafficking.

The decision did not address the 25 percent duties on autos, auto parts, steel and aluminum, which are governed by separate legislation.
