Macron Called For A Coalition Of Europe And Pacific Rim Countries

The French president made the announcement in Singapore.

French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Europe and Asia to forge a new alliance to counter major powers seeking to create "spheres of coercion" in the region, France 24 reported. His statement came at the ongoing Shangri-La Dialogue defense and security conference in Singapore.

"We face the challenge of revisionist countries that want to impose - under the name of spheres of influence - spheres of coercion. Countries that want to appropriate resources, be it fisheries or minerals, and displace others for their own benefit," Macron said.

Macron called for "a new alliance between Europe and Asia, based on our common norms and principles."

"The time of non-alignment has undoubtedly passed, but the moment has come for coalitions of action - and countries capable of acting together must create all the conditions necessary for this to happen," he said.

As France 24 notes, the annual forum in Singapore is attended by defense ministers and officials from around the world, with the event having become a barometer of U.S.-China relations in recent years.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will address the conference on Saturday, while Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun will not attend. Instead, China will be represented by a senior officer from the National Defense University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Macron's speech came at the end of his tour of Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore, during which he presented France as a credible alternative to Washington and Beijing, France 24 wrote.
