Macron Urged China To Stop North Korea's Interference In The War With Ukraine

The French president threatened Beijing with NATO intervention.

China should influence North Korea to stop helping Russia in its war against Ukraine if it does not want NATO to interfere in Southeast Asia, French President Emmanuel Macron said at the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference in Singapore, France 24 reported. He noted that he had opposed the North Atlantic Alliance playing any role in Asia in recent years. "But what happens with North Korea acting together with Russia on European soil is a big issue for all of us," he said and called on China to force North Korea to bring its troops home. Macron warned that if that does not happen, NATO will have to consider expanding its activities in the Asian region.

North Korea has supported Russia in its war against Ukraine as part of a strategic partnership pact between the two countries. Among other things, Pyongyang sent about 15,000 of its soldiers to the Kursk region, part of which was held by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Due to these reinforcements, the region was repulsed. In addition, the DPRK currently provides up to half of the artillery ammunition needed by the Russian army to continue military operations. In some parts, the dependence on North Korean supplies reaches 100%.

According to calculations by the Open Source Center (OSC) research center, Pyongyang could transfer up to 6 million shells to Moscow in total. This was a significant addition to Russia's own production, which Western officials estimate at 2-2.3 million units in 2024. According to Ukrainian intelligence, North Korea also sent 120 long-range self-propelled artillery systems, 120 multiple rocket launchers and 148 KN-23 and KN-24 ballistic missiles to the ally. "Without the support of Kim Jong-un, President Vladimir Putin would not really be able to continue his war in Ukraine," noted Hugh Griffiths, coordinator of a U.N. panel of experts monitoring sanctions against the DPRK.

In return, Russia gives North Korea fuel, missile technology, air defense systems and Western weapons such as Austrian Steyr Mannlicher SSG 08 rifles. Kim also receives special gifts such as snow-white horses, exotic animals, Aurus cars, a tea set and an admiral's dirk. In April, Putin publicly thanked him for his help, noting that Russia "will not forget the feat of Korean fighters" and will honor them as "heroes."
