Pentagon Chief To Visit Israel Ahead Of Trump's Trip To The Middle East
Pete Hegseth

Axios revealed details of the US defense secretary's visit.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to visit Israel ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump's planned trip to the Middle East, Axios reports.

The Pentagon chief's intention to visit Israel was told to Western media by two Israeli officials.

Hegseth is expected to arrive in Israel on May 12. There he will meet with his counterpart Israel Katz and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

It is noted that the Pentagon chief will then travel to Saudi Arabia to join Trump's visit to the Gulf states. The American president will also visit Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. However, there is no expectation that Trump will visit Israel, Axios writes.

This should be Hegseth's first trip to Israel as head of the US Defense Department. Moreover, Western media outlets point out, the visit is being prepared at a time when the two governments are "divided" over the possibility of military strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities, and amid the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip and the US military campaign in Yemen

According to Axios, Israeli defense officials and pro-Israel organizations in Washington "were concerned that many of Trump's hand-picked Pentagon officials are skeptical of U.S. military involvement in the Middle East, especially when it comes to Iran."

Western media also reported that Netanyahu and his advisers were arguing to their counterparts in the United States that a military option against Iran was appropriate.
