The Social Democratic Party, which he leads, will withdraw from the ruling coalition.
Romanian Prime Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party of Romania Marchel Ciolacu has announced his resignation amid the failed results of the first round of presidential elections for the coalition he leads.
According to G4Media.ro.
After a meeting of the leadership of Romania's Social Democratic Party, Ciolacu announced that he would resign as prime minister on the evening of May 5.
He said his party's ministers would discuss with representatives of other political forces in the coalition whether they would remain temporary members of the government. Ciolacu said earlier about the possibility of the Social Democrats leaving the coalition.
"This coalition is not legitimate because its candidate did not make it to the second round," the Romanian prime minister said.
Cholacu added that the future Romanian president, who will be elected on May 18, "together with the parties that can create a majority in parliament, will decide who will lead the country and who will become prime minister."
After accepting Ciolacu's resignation, acting Romanian President Ilie Bolajan should appoint an interim prime minister. Media previously wrote that it could be Education Minister Daniel David.
Reminder, the first round of the presidential election was held in Romania on May 4, which was won by far-right leader George Simion, who won 40.94%, and the liberal mayor of Bucharest Nicusor Dan - 20.99%.
