"Leverage Is Prepared."

Why the Kremlin should go for an unconditional ceasefire.

The Russians must agree to an unconditional ceasefire, otherwise they will face serious sanctions from the United States on trade with third countries. An expert of the United Ukraine think tank Igor Popov said about this on air of FREEDOM.

The political scientist emphasized that not much time has passed since the meeting in the Vatican between the leaders of Ukraine and the United States Vladimir Zelensky and Donald Trump, but there are already a number of statements and decisions.

"Indeed, Zelensky and Trump had a successful meeting in all respects in the Vatican, and the first result is the signing of an agreement on the creation of an investment fund (agreement on minerals - ed.), which no longer has details that frighten Ukraine. The agreement does not contradict European integration. And there is not a word in the document about fixing the past aid from Washington in the form of Ukraine's 'debt'," Popov said.

He also drew attention to the fact that since the Vatican meeting, there has not been a single statement from the United States about lifting sanctions on Russia, although there was a lot of talk about it before.

"So this means that the policy has changed. And now the situation is that Ukraine and the United States are still offering Russia a ceasefire - for a minimum of 30 days with the possibility of extension, without any additional conditions. Ukraine offers any format of negotiations about all the complicated political things, about territories, about NATO, about the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant, because it is impossible to solve all the issues at the same time in three days. So the ball is in the Russians' court. They should agree to a ceasefire without additional conditions and enter into negotiations," the speaker emphasized.

The United States will not lift any sanctions on Russia until these negotiations are successful, Popov believes.

"Moreover, if Russia does not agree, leverage is prepared. This is the Lindsey Graham bill, which has collected, if I'm not mistaken, more than 70 signatures in the Senate. So the votes are already there. If Russia does not go for peace talks, does not go for a ceasefire, then they can put these decisions into action," the guest of the broadcast summarized.
