Two rounds of voting are still possible.

Friedrich Merz, the Christian Democrats' candidate for chancellor of Germany, has failed in his first attempt to vote in the German Bundestag, German Wave reports.

He received 310 votes during the vote (316 are needed to be elected). "Against" voted 307 deputies. There are 630 deputies in the Bundestag.

Two rounds of voting are still possible.

This is the first time in German history that a candidate after successful coalition negotiations did not win support in the first round. Outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz managed to win the first round of the secret ballot - he was chosen by 395 deputies out of 736.
