The project of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine "Want to Live" showed a list of Cuban mercenaries in the Russian army, which the enemy uses in the war against Ukraine.
The full list of mercenaries published in the Telegram channel of the project.
According to "I Want to Live," Russia has been actively recruiting mercenaries from Cuba since early 2023: "Cubans, along with Sri Lankans, Nepalese and Central Asians, form the backbone of the mercenary forces used against Ukraine."
The project's experts have established the names and personal data of 1,028 Cubans who signed a contract with the Russian Armed Forces in 2023-2024.
"That the Cuban authorities are aware of and patronize mass recruitment was written by a prominent representative of the Cuban resistance, researcher Orlando Gutierrez-Boronat. After widespread public outcry, 17 people were detained in Cuba in 2023, accused of recruiting the country's citizens to participate in the war against Ukraine. The Cuban prosecutor said at the time that the suspects could face up to 30 years in prison, up to life in prison or the death penalty," the Want to Live wrote. - Unfortunately, since then, the number of Cubans recruited has multiplied. According to our data, about 20 thousand (!) Cuban citizens have fallen victim to Russian recruiters."
The Russian Federation uses a traditional scheme for recruitment: to bribe, deceive, and coerce.
"Mercenaries are offered jobs in Russia as laborers, construction workers, in warehouses, security guards, and so on. The average salary in Cuba is 32-35 dollars a month, so when Cubans are offered "easy work in brotherly Russia" with a monthly salary of 2-2.5 thousand dollars, many sign contract documents in Russian without a second thought," the report specifies.
One of the captured Cuban mercenaries said that he realized what he had signed up for only when they began to receive helmets and body armor at the military base in Rostov. After trying to refuse, he was beaten up and sent to the storm troopers.
