325 members of the Bundestag voted in favor of it.
The Bundestag has elected CDU/CSU bloc leader Friedrich Merz as Germany's federal chancellor. He will succeed the Social Democrat Olaf Scholz.
He was voted 325 deputies of the Bundestag, 289 were against, 1 - abstained.
It should be noted that Merz was elected by the Bundestag at the second attempt. Since during the first round the candidate from the CDU/CSU bloc failed to get an absolute majority (he got 310 votes). Such incidents have never happened in the country's post-war history.
After the failed vote, the Bundestag session was adjourned for party consultations. And already during the second round, 325 deputies of the Bundestag voted for the appointment of Merz as Chancellor of Germany (the vote is secret).
The candidate needed only 316 votes out of 630 (there are 328 deputies from CDU and SPD in the Bundestag) to be elected. Thus, the 69-year-old Merz becomes the tenth Chancellor of Germany.
Merz to receive the powers of Chancellor still has to receive a certificate from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Bellevue Palace. With the receipt of this document he officially becomes Chancellor. After that, he immediately returns to the Bundestag to take the oath of office.
After Merz's successful appointment as chancellor, the new composition of the German government is also expected to be approved.
The leaders of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union and the Social Democratic Party of Germany had earlier signed a 144-page coalition agreement in Berlin. The document became the basis for the functioning of the new German government.
