Merz Took The Oath Of Office And Became The New Chancellor Of The Federal Republic Of Germany

The leader of the Christian Democratic Union has officially become Germany's tenth chancellor.

In the German Bundestag, Christian Democratic Union chief Friedrich Merz took the oath of office as Germany's new chancellor, Zeit reported.

The publication published footage of Merz raising his right hand up and reciting the oath before Bundestag Speaker Julia Kleckner, who is holding the original Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany at that moment.

"I swear to devote my energies to the well-being of the German people, to increase their benefits, to prevent harm to them, to observe and protect the Basic Law and the laws of the Federation, to fulfill my duties faithfully and to show justice to everyone. God help me," Merz said.

The Bundestag confirmed the leader of the Christian Democrats as federal chancellor at the second attempt. The first time, on the morning of May 6, Merz failed to secure majority support - he fell six votes short.

The second round of voting was held the same day after agreement with the Green and Left factions. 325 parliamentarians voted for Merz, with an absolute majority of 316 votes necessary for victory, while 289 deputies opposed the appointment.

That is how the transit of power that began after the victory of the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) in early parliamentary elections on February 23 ended in Germany. The Social Democratic Party of former Chancellor Olaf Scholz had its worst ever result in those elections.
