The minister believes that the excessive number of generals leads to politicization of the army.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the number of four-star generals and admirals in the armed forces to be reduced by at least 20 percent, CNN reported.
As of 2023, there were 37 four-star generals and admirals in the entire armed forces.
Hegseth's order also directed a 20 percent reduction in the number of generals in the National Guard, as well as a 10 percent reduction in the total number of generals and officers in the armed forces. The military now employs about 900 generals and naval officers - those with one star or higher.
In his memo, Hegseth wrote that the cuts are a "critical" step toward "eliminating redundant force structure to streamline and optimize leadership by reducing redundant general and naval officer positions."
In March, CNN reported that the Pentagon was considering significant cuts at the top military department as part of the administration's policy to shrink the federal government.
This includes During an interview last summer, he opined that about a third of the Army's highest-ranking officers are "actively involved" in the politicization of the military.
In another interview, Hegseth argued that senior officers in the Army "play by completely the wrong rules" to please "ideologues in Washington, D.C."
