The head of the German government urged Trump to "stay out" of the German Federal Republic's domestic politics.

Germany's new chancellor Friedrich Merz (Friedrich Merz) criticized the U.S. administration's support for the German far-right Alternative for Germany (AdG) party and announced a clarifying phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump. In an interview with ZDF television on Tuesday evening, May 6, Christian Democrat Merz complained that the White House is currently spreading "absurd views about the Federal Republic of Germany" and urged the U.S. to "stay out" of Germany's domestic politics.

Merz, in particular, recalled the White House's criticism of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution's decision to recognize the AdG as a right-wing extremist party. "I will be on the phone with the American president on Thursday. I do not know Trump personally yet, but I intend to speak frankly with him," the new federal chancellor said.

Merz: US should not interfere in Germany's internal affairs

"I would like to urge the American government to leave questions of German domestic politics alone and to stay away from party-political assessments as far as possible," he added.

Friedrich Merz also emphasized that he himself "has never interfered in an American election campaign or taken sides." Regarding the United States' support for the AdG, Merz said: "So far I have had the impression that America knows how to distinguish extremist parties from parties of the political center."

In contrast to a number of other Western heads of state and government, Trump has not yet congratulated Merz on his election as federal chancellor. At the same time, congratulations came from the U.S. State Department. "We will continue to work with Germany and its new government to keep the United States and Europe safe," State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told a briefing in Washington on May 6.
