Bloomberg Has Learned One Of The Topics Of Talks Between Xi Jinping And Putin

The meeting will bring up a long-standing issue.

Negotiations between Chinese leader Si Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin will include a long-standing issue. It is about the construction of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline.

This is reported by RBC-Ukraine with reference to Bloomberg.

According to the publication, talks between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin this week will include a discussion of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline project.

"This will reopen discussions that have been stymied for years by disagreements over the cost, route and urgency of the project," the article said.

Prerequisites for talks on the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline

Moscow has long sought a deal on the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline - to strengthen ties but also to increase gas flows for the world's largest energy importer, it notes.

"Russia is becoming increasingly dependent on sales to China as it struggles to replace a European market that has shrunk sharply since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022," the journalists note of the reasons for the intensified talks on the issue.

In turn, for Beijing, with other supply options and a policy of import diversification, an agreement is far less urgent.

"However, economic tensions on both sides may bring them one step closer to a compromise: Russia is under harsh Western sanctions, while China's own industrial and trade woes make cheaper gas attractive," the authors write.

According to people familiar with government discussions, "Beijing may be willing to break the deadlock" by allowing negotiations at a higher cen "Power of Siberia 2 will allow Russia to supply an additional 50 billion cubic meters a year and allow China to replace more expensive imports of liquefied natural gas.

In comparison, Russia expects to supply 38 billion cubic meters of pipeline gas to China this year as the original Power of Siberia reaches its design capacity."

Negotiations have been going on for years

The link talks have been going on for years, however, with Beijing refraining from even a preliminary agreement while Moscow has repeatedly heralded an imminent deal.

Few people familiar with the matter said no formal signing of an agreement is expected during the visit.

Parade in Moscow

On May 9, Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin is holding a parade in Moscow. It is expected to be attended by, among others, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo and Serbian President Alexander Vucic.

Also, Xi Jinping will travel to Russia on May 9. His visit will last four days. At the same time, Latvia and Lithuania banned the plane of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic from crossing their airspace on its way to Russia.

Additionally, the drone attack on Moscow and the region paralyzed the Vnukovo airport for 10 hours. This is where high-ranking guests fly in for Putin's parade.
