The former president of the United States did not choose his words.
The pressure from the administration of US President Donald Trump on Ukraine to give up some territories to Russia is "modern appeasement". This was stated by former US President Joe Biden in an interview with BBC.
Putin and Trump
The journalists recalled that Biden repeatedly said that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin would not stop if territories were ceded to him as part of a peace agreement. In an interview, the former US president said that "people who believe otherwise are fools."
In a May 5 speech in Delaware, he said he was concerned about the breakdown in relations between the US and Europe under Trump. The former U.S. president believes the current American leader will "change the modern history of the world."
In speaking to reporters, Biden condemned Trump's calls to bring back the Panama Canal, buy Greenland and make Canada the 51st state.
"What the hell is going on here? What kind of president even talks like this? We're not like that. We're for freedom, democracy, opportunity, not confiscation," he said.
Besides, Biden commented on the Trump administration saying that Ukraine needs to give up some territories to get a peace agreement. He said this is similar to how former British Prime Minister Nevill Chamberlain in the 1930s tried to appease the demands of Adolf Hitler in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid a catastrophic war in Europe.
"This is modern appeasement," Biden said.
In addition, the former U.S. president is concerned that Europe may lose confidence that "America is still the leader."
"The continent's leaders are wondering what do I do now...? Can I rely on the United States? Will they be there?", Biden stressed.
Besides, the former American leader criticized Trump's approach to dialogue with Putin. He resented the fact that the US administration's attitude toward the Russian dictator is quite favorable:
"I just don't understand how people think that if we allow a dictator, a thug, to decide that he's going to seize significant tracts of land that don't belong to him, that's going to satisfy him. I don't quite understand it."
Biden also expressed fears that some NATO countries bordering Russia would have to make concessions to Putin if Ukraine ceded some of its territories.
Aid for Ukraine
Biden is also confident that under his administration, the United States has provided sufficient support to Ukraine. He recalled that during the three years of Russia's full-scale invasion, the White House eventually lifted some restrictions.
"We gave them everything they needed to ensure their independence and were prepared to respond more aggressively if Putin acted again," the former U.S. president added.
Oval Office Scandal
Biden also spoke out about the Oval Office scandal that took place between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Trump on Feb. 28.
"I believe that the way it took place was beneath America," the former U.S. president said.
