Vance Responded To Russia's Territorial Claims In Ukraine

"There will be no "gifts" for Moscow.

Washington seeks to preserve Ukraine's sovereignty as a result of a potential end to Russia's war of conquest. At the same time, Moscow cannot count on a "gift" to it of Ukrainian territories that have not been occupied.

This was reported by Fox News with reference to the statement of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance on air.

The US official was responding to a question from the anchor regarding Washington's position amid his past statement that Russia is demanding too much in the agreement to settle the war with Ukraine, and whether it is time to step up US military support for Ukraine.

"Well, we'll see what happens, of course. But look, we knew Russia would ask for too much," Vance noted.

The US vice president emphasized that Russia "can't count on territory in Ukraine that it hasn't even conquered yet."

Vance also added that "everybody knew Russia would ask for too much because it was 'winning on the front.

According to the American top official, at the same time, "the Ukrainians want a ceasefire, in his opinion, because things are 'not going well.'"

"And our position is that we don't want Ukraine to break up. We obviously want Ukraine to remain a sovereign country, but Russia can't expect to be given territory that it hasn't even conquered yet," Vance said.

In addition, the U.S. vice president reiterated the possibility of Washington withdrawing from negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war. He explained that this could happen if "Russia conducts them (negotiations - ed.) in bad faith."

"We knew the Russians would ask for more than we could offer. This is how negotiations often happen. It doesn't bother me. What would bother me is if we came to the conclusion that the Russians were negotiating in bad faith. And if that happens, yes, we will withdraw from the negotiations," Vance told us.

The U.S. official, meanwhile, is convinced that "the fact that the Russians are offering a peace plan at all is a breakthrough" and that "the Ukrainians are offering a concrete proposal is already a breakthrough."

"But we have to try to bring these sides a little bit closer together to achieve a lasting peace. We're not there yet. We're going to keep working on it until we decide at the end of the day we can't make any progress," Vance emphasized.
