Italian Engineer Proposed To Raise Venice By 30 Centimeters

The plan calls for drilling about a dozen specialty wells.

Venice is slowly but surely going underwater: over the past century, the city has sunk by almost 25 centimeters, while sea levels in the region have risen by another 30.

Engineer Enter Teatini has proposed an unconventional solution - to raise the city by pumping salt water deep underground. This would give Venice "two or three decades of respite," writes Bild.

The gist of the idea is to use technology similar to that used in northern Italy to store gas. In summer, when the underground storage tanks are filled, the ground rises slightly, and in winter, when the gas is withdrawn, it sinks.

"Our task is not to extract water, but on the contrary, to pump it back in," explains Teatini.

The plan involves drilling about a dozen special wells in a 10-kilometer-long perimeter around Venice. Thanks to this, the ground level should gradually rise. The main thing - not to allow water to break through to the surface, in this will help a thick clay layer under the lagoon.

To not cause earth tremors, the rise of Venice will be limited to 20-30 centimeters. According to the engineer's idea, the city will "float" on a soft cushion of water, while the land around it will remain stable.
