Moscow may carry out a provocation in the Baltic States under the guise of "protecting the Russian-speaking population", similar to the Kremlin's operation to annex Crimea in 2014, said the head of the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) Bruno Kahl, who is preparing to leave his post.
According to him, there is no question of a large-scale invasion with tanks and bombings - Russia is enough to send "green men" to Estonia to protect the allegedly Russian-speaking minority, Kal's words Reuters. In this way, he believes, President Vladimir Putin will try to test NATO's resolve to protect its allies.
Kahl said Ukraine was an intermediate stage for Moscow on the way to a clash with the alliance. "We are quite sure, and we have intelligence evidence, that Ukraine is just a step on Russia's path to the West," he said. The BND chief believes that part of the Russian top brass does not believe that the alliance will respond harshly if one of its members is attacked.
"They no longer believe that NATO's Article Five works. And they would like to test it. They want to return NATO to the state of the late 1990s. They want to throw America out of Europe and will use any means necessary to achieve this," Kahl emphasized.
At the same time, he believes that negotiating with Moscow is pointless now, as Putin has not changed his position "on an aggressive approach to solving this problem."
In 2014, during the seizure of Crimea, unmarked Russian military personnel took control of key facilities on the peninsula; they became known as "green men" or "polite people."
