The Supreme Court affirmed the conviction.
Argentina's Supreme Court has upheld former President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's conviction for fraud.
According to Bloomberg.
According to the decision, the court approved a sentence of six years in prison, as well as a lifetime ban from holding public office.
Bloomberg notes that Kirchner, who could now face imminent arrest, was convicted of bribery in 2022 but avoided jail time because she enjoyed immunity as acting vice president.
The verdict was upheld on appeal in 2024. Kirchner has exhausted her legal options, leaving Argentina's highest court to have the final say.
The politician herself called the decision politically motivated, telling supporters outside her party's headquarters that those in power know they are "the only ones who can create an alternative" when President Javier Miley's government "collapses."
Subpoena and the ex-president's plans
According to local media, the court summoned Kirchner within the next five working days. However, at 72, she is entitled to house arrest and is unlikely to be sentenced to prison.
The politician herself, a representative of the long-dominant party, announced last week that she would run in provincial legislative elections in Buenos Aires in September.
Some experts believed this could grant her immunity or at least prolong the process, but the ruling rules out that possibility.
Although Kirchner remains one of Argentina's most popular opposition leaders, approval ratings are not so rosy.
A recent LatAm Pulse poll conducted by AtlasIntel for Bloomberg News found that only 33 percent view her favorably.
It has been noted that the former president has rallied her party as the ruling approaches. She urged supporters to "mobilize" ahead of elections in which Mealey aims to win a majority of seats in Congress to pass major economic reforms.
"This model is unsustainable. They think they will solve the problem by sending me to jail. They can put me in jail, but the people will be worse off every day," Kirchner said of the Miley government, speaking to supporters on Monday.
What is known about Argentina's former president
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner served as president from 2007 to 2015. Her party lost the last election to Milieu, but she remained a prominent opposition leader while serving as president of her party.
It is noted that Kirchner survived an assassination attempt in 2022 and has also faced other corruption cases at various stages of the legal process. She, in turn, has repeatedly denied wrongdoing in the bribery case denounced it as a political maneuver by her opponents and the justice system.
