The U.S. Commerce Secretary is "very optimistic."
India and the US will speed up trade talks to strike a deal that will bring "early benefits" to both sides. The countries are seeking to conclude it before Trump's duties go into effect in July.
It was reported by Bloomberg.
According to an official who asked not to be named, trade representatives from India and the US met in New Delhi for about a week. They discussed greater market access, digital trade, customs rules and technical barriers to trade.
The latest discussions also covered food, plant and human health safety rules and standards. The source added that both sides have made good progress towards a balanced agreement.
He also said that talks on the first tranche of the trade deal will continue to accelerate.
It is noted that India and the US are working on a phased trade deal with a tentative agreement scheduled for July, the deadline for the imposition of the US President Donald Trump administration's so-called reciprocal tariffs. They will be 26% against India.
Earlier this month, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said he was very optimistic about the prospects for a US-India trade deal "in the not-so-distant future".
Before that, in May, Indian minister Piyush Goyal met with Lutnick and described the meeting as "constructive."
Bloomberg added that India was one of the first countries to initiate trade talks with the US this year. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made efforts to appease the White House by offering concessions on issues ranging from trade to immigration.
