SpaceX and Starlink in one bottle.
SpaceX is facing increased competition after years of dominance in the market of space launches and satellite internet services Starlink. In particular, American startup SpinLaunch announced its intention to break the record for the number of microsatellites simultaneously launched into orbit, writes JasonDeegan.
In 2021, Ilon Musk's company set a world record by simultaneously launching 143 satellites into orbit. Now an ambitious competitor called SpinLaunch has announced its intention to launch 250 microsatellites in a single mission. The startup promises to create a constellation of Meridian satellites that is ostensibly meant to outperform industry giant Starlink.
With the support of industry partners such as NanoAvionics and Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace, SpinLaunch is positioning itself as a key player in the journey to transform satellite communications that exists today.
To gain an edge in this market, SpinLaunch wants to use a revolutionary method of putting satellites into orbit that will be different from traditional rocket payload launches. Instead, the satellites want to be "tossed" into space using a huge centrifuge. In theory, this method looks to be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than conventional rocket launches.
But even with its innovative technology, SpinLaunch has decided to launch its first batch of satellites by relying on traditional rockets. As JasonDeegan writes, the decision has caused consternation in the space community, with skeptics already expressing doubts that centrifuge technology is even suitable for launching satellites into space.
SpinLaunch itself says that using traditional rockets for its first launches is simply a pragmatic move to speed up the deployment of its Meridian constellation of satellites while the space centrifuge is being refined and perfected.
"The success of the Meridian space constellation could set the stage for a new era of satellite launches - one that is not only more efficient, but also more affordable for companies and countries alike," writes JasonDeegan, but adds that only time will tell if the startup's promises are realistic.
