If necessary, the issue will be discussed again in the European Council.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed hope that the European Union will adopt the 18th package of sanctions against Russia as early as next week, despite Slovakia's opposition.

As BILD, Merz made the statement in Berlin after a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

"I am grateful that the European Commission has initiated the proposals for the 18th sanctions package. If everything goes according to plan, it will be adopted as early as next week," the German chancellor said.

Merz said that despite Bratislava's resistance, negotiations on the sanctions package would begin next week in the committee of EU permanent representatives in Brussels.

"If necessary, we will have to discuss it again in the European Council. But it may be possible to reach an agreement as early as next week," the chancellor suggested.

The publication notes that he was referring to the upcoming EU summit.

Frederiksen, for her part, called for a tougher course toward Moscow, noting that the West has relied on negotiations with the Kremlin for too long. In parallel, work continues in the US on possible sanctions by Congress and the administration.
