These are the largest losses for Russia since World War II.
The Russian army has lost 1 million people killed and wounded since the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Russian leadership is willing to put up with high losses for the sake of tactical successes on the front.
The British Defense Ministry reported this in X (Twitter).
According to the summary, about 250,000 Russian soldiers out of 1 million are killed or missing (presumed dead), making these losses the largest for Russia since World War II.

Intact Losses
Russia has already lost 200,000 men in 2025 alone. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, average daily losses of Russian troops exceed 1,250.
British intelligence reports that irrecoverable combat losses (killed, missing and seriously wounded) currently range from 400,000 to 500,000.
"Wounded soldiers, especially those with severe injuries, continue to overwhelm Russia's military medicine system at all levels of care. This causes serious logistical problems and leads to a shortage of military medics," the summary said.
Numerical pressure tactics and leadership attitudes
According to British intelligence, Russian forces are highly likely to continue to try to stretch the defenses of Ukrainian forces, using numerical superiority to break through defensive positions and achieve tactical successes.
"Russia's senior leadership is almost certainly willing to tolerate persistently high levels of casualties if this does not adversely affect public or elite support for the war, and if these losses can be made up," Britain's Defense Ministry said.
