The development remains classified.
The U.S. Air Force has unveiled the first image of a new long-range nuclear-capable cruise missile, the AGM-181A LRSO (Long-Range Standoff). The development of this missile is a priority for the Global Strike Command and is intended to replace the obsolete AGM-86B, in service since the end of the Cold War, writes The War Zone (translated by Charter97.org).
Visually, the LRSO resembles the high-tech AGM-158 JASSM: reverse V-shaped tail section, trapezoidal hull cross-section and wedge-shaped nose. The visualization does not show the air intake - probably for reasons of secrecy. Some elements may have been deliberately hidden or distorted.
The new missile should provide high survivability in the face of modern air defense. With stealth technology, range and autonomous route-selection capability, the LRSO will be an important part of the US strategic nuclear arsenal. It will be invulnerable to early detection systems focused on ballistic threats and capable of operating in the face of electronic countermeasures and lack of GPS.

The missile will carry an updated W80-4 thermonuclear warhead and will be part of the massive Long Range Strike program, which includes the B-21 Raider strategic bomber, upgraded B-52s and new command and control and reconnaissance elements.
Although the program remains largely classified, it is known that tests of the missile are already underway. The LRSO should strengthen the air component of the U.S. nuclear triad by providing flexibility and the ability to make a show of force without the immediate use of weapons. This makes it an essential tool of strategic deterrence in the new arms race between the great powers.
