Kiev's movement into the Alliance is irreversible.
Ukraine's future is unambiguously linked to NATO, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said, speaking at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev. Pistorius emphasized that decisions regarding Ukraine's irreversible movement toward Alliance membership taken earlier at NATO summits remain valid. "We have already discussed at the summits in Washington and Brussels that Ukraine's future is in NATO. I don't think there are any other processes that are going on in this regard," the minister said (quoted by UNIAN).
With regard to the final declaration of the upcoming NATO summit, which will be held June 24-25 in The Hague, Pistorius added that he could not yet comment on what language regarding Ukraine would be reflected in it. The head of the German Defense Ministry also said that Germany plans to allocate an additional 1.9 billion euros to support Ukraine in 2025. The funds, in particular, will be used to develop the production of Ukrainian long-range weapons. Although the final decision has not been made yet, Pistorius expressed confidence that it will be approved.
At the same time, according to the minister, the new German government headed by Chancellor Friedrich Merz is not considering the possibility of supplying long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
Vladimir Zelensky, for his part, said during a press conference that Germany has developed a three-year plan to supply IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine. "It does not mean that there will be a war for so many years, but still Ukraine, our land and the peace of our people should be protected by high-quality air defense systems. I am grateful that we have an understanding of the realization of this project for the next three years," the Ukrainian president said.
