The island is taking an example from Ukraine.
Taiwan is taking a cue from Ukraine and studying how to use marine drones in repelling a possible Chinese invasion.
This is reported by Reuters.
Near the small fishing port of Wushi, a Taiwanese company is testing marine drones that could become a powerful weapon in the island's arsenal in the future.
"Taiwan is taking an example from Ukraine, which has effectively used maritime drones against Russia in the Black Sea, and is studying how maritime drones can be used as an effective and inexpensive means of repelling a possible Chinese invasion," adds Reuters.
Today, under pressure from the United States (US), Taiwan is working to transform its Armed Forces so that they can wage "asymmetric warfare" using mobile, smaller and often cheaper weapons.
"Unmanned boats have played a very important role in the war in Ukraine. Unmanned drones, whether they are boats or submersibles, can effectively deter China because Taiwan is not the attacking side, we are the defending side," said Chen Kuan-ting, a lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
The research and development arm of Taiwan's Defense Ministry called the plan to build naval drones "quick and sudden," however, it has a modest budget of about $26.77 million so far.
At the same time, Taiwan's Defense Ministry chief Wellington Koo said the maritime drones would be included in an additional spending package to be made public later.
An exhibition will be held as early as next week in which more than a dozen Taiwanese and foreign companies will demonstrate unmanned surface vehicles that could be added to Taiwan's arsenal.
