A decisive moment in Israel's history has come.
A series of powerful airstrikes by Israeli forces on Tehran, Iran's missile factories and the Natanz nuclear center on Friday is the beginning of a long-running force operation aimed at preventing the Islamic Republic from obtaining its own nuclear weapons, announced Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.
The violent explosions occurred overnight Friday in Tehran and, according to eyewitnesses and local media reports, at uranium enrichment facilities in Natanz.
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Hossein Salami, one of Iran's top military commanders, was killed. Iran responded by sending about 100 drones into Israeli territory. The airport in Tel Aviv was closed, tens of thousands of Israeli soldiers were put on full alert, and martial law was declared throughout the country.
"A decisive moment in Israel's history has come," Prime Minister Netanyahu said in a pre-recorded video message. - Israel has launched a targeted military operation to repel the threat to Israel's very existence that comes from Iran. The operation will continue for as many days as it takes to eliminate this threat."
According to Israeli army spokeswoman Effie Defrin, 200 warplanes were involved in the bombing raids and more than 100 targets across Iran were hit. Defrin also said at the briefing that the Israeli side confirmed the deaths of several top Iranian army officials: in addition to the commander of the Revolutionary Guards, the chief of general staff of the Iranian armed forces and the deputy commander of the Iranian army were killed.
