'Green Light' From US: Axios Reveals Details Of Israeli Strike On Iran

The operation was eight months in the making.

Israel's attack on Iran, which hit nuclear facilities missile sites, as well as eliminated nuclear scientists and important generals, was the result of eight months of intensive secret preparations. This is what Axios writes, citing its sources.

"The idea of an operation simultaneously targeting Iran's missile and nuclear programs, which Netanyahu has called existential threats to Israel, emerged after Iran struck Israel in October," the publication writes.

The reason was the threat from Iran's rapidly growing missile arsenal, as well as the weakening of the country's air defenses after Israel's retaliatory strike. Another factor was intelligence on nuclear weapons research and development that indicated Iran could build a bomb faster.

Israel's plans were also accelerated by the planned opening in the coming weeks of a new underground enrichment facility in Iran that would be invulnerable even to powerful U.S. anti-bunker missiles.

The Israeli operation involved more than just airstrikes. Officials say Israel's Mossad intelligence service has agents on the ground conducting covert sabotage operations on missile and air defense sites.

An unofficial green light from the United States

Media reports say the Donald Trump administration gave the green light for the massive strike, contrary to its public stance of non-involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, through unofficial channels.

"Two Israeli officials told Axios that Trump and his aides only pretended to oppose the Israeli attack publicly and did not express their opposition privately. "We had a clear green light from the U.S.," one of them said.

The goal, they said, was to reassure Iran that an attack would not be imminent and to make sure Iranians on Israel's target list did not move to new locations.

Netanyahu's aides even informed Israeli journalists that Trump was trying to stop an Israeli strike in a phone conversation on Monday, when in fact the conversation was about coordination before the attack, Israeli officials said.

Trump later confirmed that he was aware of the impending attack, but emphasized that the U.S. had no military involvement.
