Ukrainian Friend Of Lukashenko Could Face Life Imprisonment

He's being charged with state treason.

Ukrainian MP Evgeny Shevchenko faces life imprisonment for treason during martial law. He has already been in a pre-trial detention center since November 2024, and now he is facing additional charges that could lead to the maximum punishment - life imprisonment with confiscation of property, Radiyo Svaboda writes.

According to the State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine, Shevchenko publicly declared friendship with Alexander Lukashenko, and his statements were considered harmful to national security by experts. They found propaganda, distortion of facts, incitement of hostility and calls to violate the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

"The Ukrainian MP was additionally informed about suspicion of treason under martial law. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property," said GBI spokeswoman Olga Chykanova.

Documents were found during searches in Shevchenko's apartment and office that may testify to illegal deliveries of Belarusian fertilizers to Ukraine and possible financial ties with Belarusian companies that paid for his trips to Minsk. It was these visits and meetings with Lukashenko that became key in the case.

Even in 2021, Yevgeny Shevchenko was expelled from the faction "Servant of the People" after an unauthorized meeting with Lukashenko in April of that year. The party leadership claimed it had not given him a mandate to negotiate with the Belarusian side.
