L.A. Protests: The Marines Made Their First Detention

The detainee turned out to be a 27-year-old Army veteran.

Marines stationed in Los Angeles have temporarily detained a man. It is the first such incident since Marines were stationed there by order of US President Donald Trump.

It was reported by Reuters.

The man was detained at the Wilshire Federal Building in Los Angeles. Marines rolled him up and turned him over to civilian representatives of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

A spokesman for the military's Northern Command confirmed to reporters that active military forces "can temporarily detain an individual under certain circumstances."

"Any temporary detention is immediately terminated when the person can be safely transferred to the custody of appropriate civilian law enforcement officials," he said.

The detainee turned out to be 27-year-old Army veteran Marcos Lio. After his release, he said he was on his way to a Department of Veterans Affairs office when Marines asked him to stop. According to the man, he was treated "fairly."

"They're just doing their job," the man noted.
