Ukraine's president responded to what strong steps he expects from Trump.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky believes that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is peddling chatter and looking for reasons not to impose new sanctions against Russia. But there are moments that show that Putin will not be turned away from new sanctions.
A correspondent of UNIAN reports that the president said this during a meeting with journalists on June 13.
In particular, the head of Ukrainians was asked if he was disappointed that US President Donald Trump has not yet imposed sanctions against Russia.
"I really want Trump to make strong steps. And when President Trump has not yet decided whether or not to impose sanctions, he's leaving that time for some strong move of his own. He's probably afraid that he's going to completely close the window for dialog. But I believe Putin is only looking for an excuse not to impose sanctions. If Trump imposes strong sanctions, Putin will say, "we're not going to talk." That's what happened with the Kursk operation. He started saying, "ah since the Kursk operation, so there can't be any dialog." We understand that it's all just talk," Zelensky noted.
In particular, the Ukrainian head believes that this is just like the so-called "strikes" in response to the SBU's Operation Spider Web.
"If he didn't have a massive [Russian] strike of almost 500 drones a day before, it would still be possible to talk about it hypothetically. He just needs a reason. A reason not to have a ceasefire [ceasefire] and a reason not to impose sanctions. He is working in those directions. So there are a lot of things that depend on America. You see everything. Iran, and Israel, and Ukraine, and the Russians, and Europe, which is looking at the signal: give us a signal that we're together and we're moving on. And these are all very important things. It seems to me that some signals are there. I do not know whether it is from President Trump's entourage or from him, but still there are moments that he realizes that Putin will not turn away after all," - emphasized Zelensky.
Separately, the President of Ukraine expressed disappointment over the fact that the United States congratulated Russia on its day.
"In any case, congratulations to Russia on Russia Day by the United States - for me it is an unpleasant fact. I will not hide it. It's Russia's Independence Day. They want to take away our independence. This war, specifically for the independence of Ukraine. Russia's war against Ukraine. Of course, I do not take it with great positivity when people want to take independence away from Ukraine, and our partner country - the United States - congratulates them on such a day," Zelensky emphasized.
