On the sidelines of the International Labor Organization Conference, which is taking place these days in Geneva, the Committee on the Application of Standards presented its findings on Belarus.

The Committee held a special meeting on June 7 and discussed the measures proposed by the Governing Body to implement Article 33 of the ILO Constitution, applied to the government of Belarus for violating the right to freedom of association and failing to implement the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry, writes Salidarnasts.

The Committee expressed serious doubts about the independence of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus and called on the government to work with the ILO to resolve these problems and ensure the activities of independent trade unions.

The Committee also took note of the report on the situation in Belarus, noting that the government has once again failed to provide new information on measures taken to implement the Committee's recommendations.

In this regard, there was again an urgent call for the immediate release of imprisoned trade unionists. 2544 in favor, 72 against and 112 abstained.

The acting chairman of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (BCDTU) Maksim Paznyakov said that usually the decision-making procedure in the Committee is based on the principle of consensus, that is, everyone agrees with the conclusions and a document is adopted:

- But the Belarusian delegation, supported by Russia and China, demanded a vote, claiming that there is allegedly a very serious division of opinions. Since 2023, the authorities have constantly questioned the Committee's conclusions.

That is, according to the regime, the entire thirty-year history of violations of workers' rights in Belarus, the crushing of independent trade unions, repressions, arrests, criminal trials and imprisonment of trade union leaders should simply be forgotten or pretend that it did not exist and does not exist. Closing your eyes to all international norms and ILO conventions.
