French president opposes Putin's mediation between Israel and Iran.
French President Emmanuel Macron said during a visit to Greenland, where he expressed support for the Arctic island, that Russia did not have the authority to mediate the crisis between Israel and Iran, as suggested by US President Donald Trump.
According to Reuters.
In an interview with ABC News on Sunday, Trump said he was willing for Putin, whose troops have invaded Ukraine and who has resisted Trump's efforts to broker a truce with Kiev, to mediate between Israel and Iran. Macron said he rejected such an idea.
"I don't believe that Russia, which is now engaged in an intense conflict and has not respected the UN Charter for several years in a row, can be a mediator," Macron said.
He also noted that France has not participated in any of Israel's attacks against Iran.
Macron visited Greenland, a self-governing part of Denmark that has the right to declare independence and which Trump has threatened to seize, before traveling to Canada for a summit of G7 leaders.
Last weekend, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump had a phone conversation that touched on the escalation between Iran and Israel.
