Russia's only aircraft carrier has been under repair for almost 10 years.
Russia's only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, has been under repair for nearly a decade and has not participated in real operations. Built back in Soviet times, the ship has long since lost its combat capability, despite the Kremlin's attempts to demonstrate the development of the Navy and announce plans to build new aircraft carriers, writes The National Interest (translated by Charter97. org).org)
The Russian military's recent statements about the project of a new aircraft carrier with a displacement of up to 90,000 tons, capable of carrying the latest Su-57 fighters, are questionable.
With technical problems and losses in the war with Ukraine, such plans look more like propaganda statements than real projects.
The Admiral Kuznetsov has spent more time under repair than at sea since the early 2010s. During this time, the ship has faced a series of serious incidents: fires, crane falls, airplane landing accidents, and even military deaths. The ship is also equipped with an outdated fuel system powered by fuel oil, making it easily detectable by thick black smoke.
After the collapse of the USSR, of the two planned aircraft carriers, only one went to Russia; the other was sold to China. The operational history shows the systemic problems of the Russian navy and the limited ability to repair or modernize such complex ships.
While Moscow talks about building new aircraft carriers, the only aircraft carrier sits idle in dry dock.
