But he didn't give the final order.

US President Donald Trump has approved a plan to attack Iran. But is refraining from implementing it for now.

It was reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Sources said Trump told senior aides Tuesday night that he approves plans to attack Iran. However, he is refraining from doing so to see if Tehran will give up its nuclear program.

It is noted that Iran's well-defended uranium enrichment plant at Fordow is a possible U.S. target.

The facility is hidden under a mountain and is generally considered by military experts to be out of range of all but the most powerful bombs.

The Journal adds that the U.S. military has been building up forces in the Middle East in recent days. A third U.S. Navy destroyer has entered the eastern Mediterranean Sea, and a second U.S. aircraft carrier strike group is heading to the Arabian Sea.

Although the Pentagon has said the military buildup is purely defensive in nature, it better positions the U.S. should Trump decide to join Israeli attacks on Iran.

"It could also be a tactic to pressure Iran to capitulate or make concessions," the WSJ suggests.
