Austrian Colonel: Operation Spider Web Is A Huge Embarrassment For Putin

The Ukrainian drone strike was unexpected and extremely effective.

The large-scale special operation "Spider's Web", which was carried out by the SBU on June 1, significantly affected the combat capability of the Russian air force. Moreover, it dealt a blow to the Kremlin's nuclear strategy. That is why Russia will be preparing a retaliatory strike. This opinion was expressed by Austrian Colonel Markus Reisner in an interview with Welt.

According to him, the strike of Ukrainian drones against combat aircraft was unexpected and extremely effective. The expert compared the scale of the operation to the attack of British torpedo bombers on the Italian fleet at Taranto in 1940, as well as the Japanese attack on the American Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Scale of Russian losses

It is known that the Ukrainian UAV attack hit more than 40 aircraft, many of which were involved in missile attacks on Ukraine. Reisner said that these aircraft have constituted one of the main tools of Russia's strike aircraft since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

The expert added that Ukraine has destroyed or disabled about a third of Russia's strategic bomber fleet. In his opinion, this will significantly limit Russia's ability to launch massive air strikes against Ukraine.

Reisner also recalled that some of the affected bombers were capable of carrying nuclear warheads on board. He believes their loss was a serious blow to Russia's nuclear deterrent capability.

"One thing is clear: this drone attack is a huge embarrassment to Putin and his military. Now he must explain to his people how such an attack could happen in the fourth year of a full-scale war," the colonel told reporters.

Why the special operation was successful

Reisner suggested that the special operation was successful, in part, because the Russians underestimated Ukraine's capabilities. He did not rule out that the bombers were assembled at airfields to prepare for another massive attack, causing their defenses to be minimal.

According to the publication, the drones that struck the Russian planes were activated near airfields up to 4,000 kilometers away from Ukraine, using Russia's GSM network, auto-targeting system and artificial intelligence to recognize target contours.

Russia will prepare a response

The colonel does not rule out that Russia may resort to a new wave of massive air strikes in response to Ukraine's special operation. He believes the Russians could launch strikes using Su-30, Su-34, Su-35 and MiG-31 aircraft, as well as using unguided aerial bombs or short- and medium-range missiles. Reisner is confident that Ukraine's border towns are under threat.

In addition, the colonel said that such large-scale operations are unlikely in the near future. He emphasized that Ukraine has already lost the surprise factor, and Russia is likely to strengthen security measures.
