May was a record month since the beginning of the year in terms of the number of attempts of illegal migrants to get from Belarus to the territory of neighboring EU countries, according to the analysis of data of their border agencies, conducted by "Pozirkam".
For five months of the year, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland recorded 15.3 thousand attempts to violate the border, including 6.8 thousand in May (4.4 thousand in April).
Lithuania accounted for 3.46% of such attempts last month.
Lithuania accounted for 3.46% of such attempts last month, Latvia - 32.92%, Poland - 63.62%.
Reminder, the migration crisis on the borders of Belarus with Poland and Lithuania emerged in the second half of 2021. Migrants from the Middle East and Africa flew to Belarus to illegally cross into the European Union. Polish and Lithuanian border guards have repeatedly testified that Belarusian border guards help migrants cross the border. The actions of the Belarusian authorities in the West were regarded as a form of hybrid warfare.
The Baltic States and Poland consider it a revenge for Lukashenko's tough stance on repression against the Belarusian opposition and civil society. May 19, it became known that Lithuania sent a statement to the International Court of Justice about Belarus' violation of its obligations under the Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air of November 15, 2000, supplementing the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
