Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock has been elected president of the United Nations General Assembly. This was announced by the UN press service.

Berbock will become president of the 80th session (September 2025 - September 2026).

The candidacy of the former German foreign minister was voted by 167 representatives of member countries.

In her first speech, she thanked the representatives of the countries for their trust and said she intends to be an "honest broker" in the work of the General Assembly.

The president of the UN General Assembly presides over meetings, coordinates the work of the body, monitors compliance with procedures and represents the assembly on the international stage. He does not make political decisions, performing mainly representative and organizational functions.
