Trump Responds On When He Will Decide On A Strike On Iran

The U.S. goal remains unchanged.

US President Donald Trump has said he will decide within two weeks whether to strike Iran. According to Reuters, Trump's statement was quoted by White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt.

"Based on the fact that there is a significant likelihood of negotiations that may or may not take place with Iran in the near future, I will make a decision whether or not to act within the next two weeks," Trump said.

Livitt said Trump's statement was in response to media speculation about "the situation in Iran." She declined to go into details about his schedule, including how he assesses the chances of success of further talks with Iran.

She also emphasized that Trump's goal of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains unchanged, although "if there is a chance for diplomacy, the president will always take it."

Livitt declined to say whether Trump would seek congressional authorization for any strikes on Iran. Democrats have previously expressed concern over media reports that Trump has already approved a plan to attack Iran, bypassing Congress, which has the sole authority to declare war.

At the same time, critics say that in the five months since returning to office, Trump has set a number of deadlines - including for Russia's war in Ukraine, as well as for other countries negotiating trade tariffs - only to suspend those deadlines or move them.

As Reuters notes, the two-week deadline is Trump's favorite time frame, and he has often set it in both this and previous terms in office. More often than not, however, that deadline was then not enforced or ignored altogether.
