Europe Plans To Close Schengen For Hundreds Of Thousands Of Russians

The prohibition should remain in force even after the end of the war.

A number of European countries are going to close entry to the Schengen zone for Russians who participated in the war in Ukraine. As ERR writes, such plans were announced by the internal security ministers of the Baltic States, Nordic countries and Poland at a meeting in Tallinn. The meeting was also attended by European Commission Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner and a representative of the border organization Frontex.

Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro said it was necessary to restrict free travel for "hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens who fought against an independent European state."

"We must take a very clear position that these people cannot travel freely in Schengen - we will not give them residence permits, we will not give them visas, because all these people who killed and destroyed there pose a very serious security threat to us all," he said.

It is emphasized that the ban on entry to the Schengen zone for participants in Russia's military aggression should remain in force even after the end of active hostilities.
