Major companies are canceling flights.

Conflict in the Middle East is disrupting global routes. Key hubs in the region are under threat.

According to Bloomberg.

American and European airlines are canceling flights to the Middle East

American and European carriers have begun suspending flights to the Persian Gulf amid the growing conflict between Israel and Iran. The U.S. is considering strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, raising the threat of escalation.

American Airlines has suspended daily flights from the U.S. to Doha. Finnair and Air Canada also canceled flights to the region, and United Airlines temporarily halted service to Dubai. Air France-KLM canceled several flights to Dubai, and British Airways halted flights to Bahrain until the end of the month. Air Canada also halted flights to Dubai.

This is the first time in the past 20 months that the Gulf's major air hubs have been affected by mass cancellations.

Previously, the restrictions mainly concerned areas around Israel and routes that could carry Iranian missiles.

A growing threat to a previously stable region

The development underscores the growing risks even in parts of the Middle East previously considered safe. Tehran has threatened to strike U.S. bases in the region and close the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important sea route for oil exports.

Dubai and Doha are key international aviation hubs. Their geographic location makes them major connecting points between the US, Europe and Asia.

Risks to civilian air travel are increasing

Recent events have heightened concerns about civilian flights over conflict zones. An Emirates Boeing 777 had problems in Tehran, and an Azerbaijan Airlines airliner was likely hit by a Russian missile near Grozny in late 2024 and later crashed in Kazakhstan - killing 38 people.

There have already been tragic incidents in the history of civil aviation - such as the downing of Malaysia Airlines MH17 over Ukraine by a Russian missile, which killed 298 people.

US warns and tightens security measures

American airlines reacted after the US embassy in Qatar urged citizens to be extra vigilant. It was advised to avoid crowds and places associated with the U.S. and to "stay in the shadows."

American Airlines canceled flights through June 22. United Airlines suspended flights between Newark and Dubai until further notice, and Delta and United had previously halted flights to Tel Aviv.
