All of Israeli politics is behind this decision.
Israeli President Yitzhak Herzog is convinced that a military operation against Iran's nuclear program was the only right decision. He said this in an interview with BILD editor-in-chief Paul Ronzheimer.
"We had to eliminate this threat, and that's what we are doing. We know with absolute certainty that Iran came to the threshold [of building a nuclear bomb] and was very close. It has enriched uranium to 60% - and that can't be for anything other than weapons development. [...] We are eliminating this threat before it explodes," Yitzhak Herzog said.
The head of the country emphasizes that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's political career cannot be the real motivation behind the strikes on Iran, as some experts believe.
"This is complete nonsense, because the entire Israeli security system, which sometimes argues with Netanyahu, fully supported this decision. And I say this clearly: the whole of Israeli politics is behind this decision. I also fully support it."
With regard to possible US assistance in destroying Iran's nuclear facilities, Herzog believes that this can only be a decision by Donald Trump. At the same time, the Israeli president emphasizes that there is now "a rare opportunity to eliminate a threat that has hung over the entire world for decades."
When asked whether Israel wants to kill the Ayatollah and overthrow the mullahs, Herzog said the country has no such goal.
"We don't have a goal regarding Khamenei and we don't have a goal of regime change. But it could be a side effect with great historical consequences that will benefit the Iranian people."
These words by Herzog partially contradict remarks by Defense Minister Israel Katz, who declared the assassination of Ali Khamenei a military objective.
